In 1895, the town commissioned the Drexler brothers, Anton and Josef, who were architects from Vienna, with the extremely prestigious construction of the German grammar school at the end of the newly emerging station boulevard. The Neoclassical building boasts rich sculptural decoration, which pays tribute to knowledge. The façade is adorned with statues of Moravia, Homer and Athena. Soon after its grand opening in September 1897, people proudly proclaimed that the building, with its monumentality, surpassed many university buildings of the monarchy, and it became a symbol of the town’s prosperity.
Through its halls passed many successful and important personalities, Hans Nibel being one of them. After graduating in 1899, he became a famous mechanical engineer for the Mercedes-Benz automobile company, the successor of Ferdinand Porsche. Not only did he construct the cars, he also raced them. In 1909, the engineering team led by Hans Nibel unveiled the fastest car of its time, called the Blitzen Benz, which could speed up to a dizzying 228 km/h.
