16. The Nysa Fortress

From the beginning of its history, the town was surrounded by wooden fortifications and a moat. In the first half of the 14th century, Nysa built mighty walls with four entrances and 28 bastions. Reconstruction of the fortifications began in 1643 and was completed with the emergence of a system of ten bastions with moats and a service road running between them. The situation changed after the entry of Prussian troops led by King Frederick the Great. Nysa became the base of a military post, a modern fortress, and during its history, even a large prison camp.
