3. The Town Hall

The first town hall was built in the 14th century. The original structure was extended a hundred years later. Over the course of history it was destroyed several times, such as in 1590 by an earthquake. After the town was occupied by Prussia, King Frederick the Great issued a decree to knock it down. Only the 89-metre high tower remained. The town hall met its fate in 1945, when it was almost totally destroyed. The remains of it were blown up in 1966. In 2008, construction of the new 78-metre high tower was completed, following on from the previous town hall tower.
